But it is not a sustainable procurement profile for a broad PDU catalog — you will pay a meaningful price penalty on every unit, and that penalty accumulates across a multi-SKU inventory.
Bad — sub-100 single orders
Below 100 units per order, the batch discount effectively disappears. You are paying essentially retail pricing plus a small wholesale admin margin. There is nothing wrong with ordering 50 units if you need 50 units — but do not expect the unit economics to look like wholesale. The fixed setup and packaging costs that manufacturers amortize across larger batches have to be recovered somewhere, and on a sub-100 order, they are recovered in the unit price.
Wholesale Variable 2: MOQ Pressure — Matching Order Size to Sell-Through Speed
The second variable that distinguishes wholesale from retail is the minimum order quantity — the MOQ. At 500 units, the order value is five times larger, and the sell-through cycle at typical reseller inventory velocity stretches to 90-150 days. The rule I tell every new wholesale buyer is this: size your MOQ commitment to your sell-through speed, not to the depth of the discount you want to claim. A great unit price on paper is not a good deal if the inventory sits on your shelf long enough that your cost of capital exceeds the savings. For Europe, the framework is more complex because it involves both product safety (the Low Voltage Directive) and substances (RoHS). RoHS compliance is a separate requirement from CE marking, not a subset of it. The RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU restricts hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. One practical note on certification that I cannot stress enough: always request the certificate with the manufacturing lot number. - Tier 4 — Spec-level custom (engineering review required): Non-standard outlet configurations (different C13/C19 ratios than stock, non-standard outlet spacing for specialized rack configurations), non-standard voltage ratings (440V input for specific regional power grids), custom mechanical dimensions for non-standard rack enclosures, or integrated monitoring features not available on the basic PDU platform. This tier requires a separate engineering review, a new tooling investment for any custom mechanical components, and typically 2-4 weeks of additional lead time beyond the standard production schedule. It is not available on basic PDU stock SKUs — it is a new product development engagement.
For distributors building a private-label PDU program, OEM depth is the foundation of the entire margin model. At Tier 3 (1,000+ units), the distributor is effectively selling a private-label product at a significant markup over their per-unit landed cost — the brand premium is real, and it is earned by investing in the brand identity and the customer relationships that make the product sell at retail.
